‘Chehre’ director Rumy Jafry: Emraan Hashmi is just like Amitabh Bachchan when it comes to professionalism – Times of India

After postponing the release date of ‘Chehre’ multiple times in the past, the makers have finally zeroed in on August 27 this year as the release date. As the film gears up for a theatrical release next week, ETimes caught up with director Rumy Jafry who exclusively opened up about the story behind the film, the unusual pairing of Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi, and more. Excerpts:

‘Chehre’ is finally releasing in theatres. How does it feel?
I am quite excited. The film was supposed to release last year. We have waited for a long time to release it in the theatres. But hopefully, we will be able to do it soon. Right from the time we conceptulised it, we have been shooting keeping in mind that the film will have a theatrical release. With all the gripping dialogues, background score, songs and everything, it would be an absolute treat for the audience to watch ‘Chehre’ in theatres. Our producer Anand Pandit and Amitabh Bachchan were also of the view that since we have made the film for the theatres, it will release in the theatres only.

How was it working with Amitabh Bachchan?
I have directed Amitabh before in ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ too. The other films that we have been a part of together, be it ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ or others, have mostly been on either comedies or dramas. I have been thinking of trying my hands at some different genres. I come from a theatre background and wanted to use that experience somewhere. I wanted to do something new and reinvent myself, something that would excite me and at the same time surprise my audience. It is very easy to get stereotyped in this industry. When you make more than two films in the same genre, they come to believe that this is the best you can do. I wanted to break the stereotype surrounding me and my work.

When I said I wanted to do something different, all the producers I met wanted me to do something on the lines of my previous work like, ‘Biwi No. 1’, ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya’ and others. It was then that Amitabh Bachchan ji came out and supported my vision. He told me if I wanted to try something new, I should do it and that he was there to support me.

Tell us about this unusual pairing of Amitabh Bachchan and Emraan Hashmi…
After we finalised Amitabh Bachchan for ‘Chehre’, we started looking for other actors. I was looking for the second lead and Emraan fit right into the character I had envisioned. Even though I had never worked with him before, I had heard a lot about him in the industry. He is truly like Amit ji when it comes to professionalism–dedicated, hardworking and allows nothing to interfere with his work. He is very involved in the work he does. I wanted somebody just like him. When I approached him with ‘Chehre’, he, too, loved his character and was happy to come on board. Emraan’s work has turned out to be even better than I expected.

How do you look back at your journey in the film industry so far?
By God’s grace, my journey so far has been absolutely wonderful. I know I have tried putting my best foot forward in everything that I have done so far and I will keep doing the same, going forward. Now, with ‘Chehre’, I believe my second inning has begun. It will be a new chapter in my journey. If this works out, I will be happy to explore some more new and interesting subjects in the future. It will all be very different from my previous movies.

OTT has proved to be a boon for many in the last one-and-a-half years. Would you like to explore that space in the future?
Definitely! I believe people should accept and embrace all new things in life and that includes the advancement in technology. I would love to explore the platform someday. I have always been writing and making movies for the big screens but if I come up with anything that would fit the bill on OTT, I would definitely go for it.
