Prajakta Shukre on reuniting with Kangana Ranaut in ‘Thalaivi’: I can relate to her as I too come from a small town like her – Times of India

After impressing everyone with ‘Dankila’ in ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’, Prajakta Shukre has reunited with Kangana Ranaut for ‘Thalaivi’. The singer has crooned the song, ‘Teri Aankhon Mein’ in the movie. ETimes caught up with the ace singer for an exclusive interview wherein she spilled the beans on collaborating with Armaan Malik, her equation with the ‘Queen’ actress, her take on remixes and more. Excerpts…

How was it collaborating with Armaan Malik?
Armaan is a fantastic singer. He is a rising and shining star. It was great to sing with him. When I came on board for the song, he had already recorded his portions so it was quite easy for me to get into the vibe of ‘Teri Aankhon Mein’.

Tell us something about your equation with Kangana…
I have never personally met Kangana Ranaut but she is an amazing actor. But from whatever I have gathered about her from her films, interviews and people around her, I feel I can relate to her. I also hail from a small town like her. She has made it so big independently, which is really inspiring and amazing. So I feel great that I am her voice again after ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’ through this song. I really look forward to singing more and more songs for her.

You were one of the most popular contestants on ‘Indian Idol’. What has the journey been like after the show?
The journey has been really nice. Earlier, I used to feel that maybe I am lagging behind, but now, with a little more age and experience, I have understood that everybody has their own timing, their own pace to deal with their career and in terms of everything in life. I am really happy where I am and I aspire to do even better through my art.

The reality show had really opened up gates of opportunities for people like me who had no clue how to pursue their career in the city of dreams. The show helped me shift to Mumbai and realise my dreams. I believe experiences make you learn a lot of things and I am still learning.

When exactly did the music bug bite?
The music bug bit me when I was conceived in my mother’s womb because she is a singer and has a beautiful voice. My father too is a music lover. My mother was my first teacher as I started my singing training at the age of 4.I used to listen to a lot of songs by Lata Mangeshkar ji and Asha Bhosle ji.

What are your thoughts on the current trend of song remixes and remakes in Bollywood?
It might sound very diplomatic but I have a mixed opinion. Sometimes I feel that it is nice that old melodies are being presented to today’s generation. However, I also sometimes feel that it has become so stagnant that there is no original song or composition that is releasing. I think it all depends on how it is produced and presented. I also want to add that there are a few epic songs which should not be touched. They should be left to their original glory.

The trend of independent music is back. How do you look at it as a singer?
I am glad that independent music is back! Because of social media, independent artists are releasing their music on YouTube and other independent platforms. It is amazing. I am a 90s kid and have grown up listening to great independent numbers and artists. I am really happy that this generation is getting to experience the same. This independent music trend should grow stronger in India.

Who do you look up to in the industry?
I look up to a lot of people, not only in the music industry but at other artists in our industry too. There is so much to learn from everybody who has walked the path of success in their own way.

One actress you would love to lend your voice to…
I would love to lend my voice to a lot of actresses. However, if I have to name one then it would be Deepika Padukone. I just love her.
