Republic movie review highlights : Sai Dharam Tej carries the heft of an honest political drama – Times of India

Deva Katta’s Sai Dharam Tej and Aishwarya Rajesh starrer Republic hit screens this Friday after delays in shooting and release due to the pandemic.

The film tells the story of a young man called Abhiram (Sai Dharam Tej) who grows up hating the corruption his father Dasharath (Jagapathi Babu) aids in as a gazetted officer. He puts off plans of studying at the MIT in the US to pursue civils so he can make a change at the ground level as a Collector. Vishakha Vani (Ramya Krishnan) wins the local elections and her son Vishnu Vardhan takes up the mantle. Myra Hansen (Aishwarya Rajesh) is an NRI looking for her missing brother, helpless as she needs to look after his two children.

Peppered with songs that bring in some light-hearted moments in an otherwise serious film, Republic is a mixed bag so far. While Deva Katta struggles to establish love between Abhi and Myra, he excels at building the world the film is set in. Eluru and Thelluru lake, along with it’s regional flavour, almost become spectators to the corruption seeping into the ground and waters here. The director also pens bold dialogues that call out the politics behind fake encounters in rape cases and those holding bureaucratic positions. With the film getting into the thick of things right before the interval, it remains to be seen how the second half will fare.
