Indian Airlines IC 814, the Airbus A300 – en route from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi was hijacked on Friday, 24 December 1999. It was flown to several locations before landing in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The motive for the hijacking apparently was to secure the release of Islamist terrorists held in prison in India. The hostage crisis lasted for seven days and ended after India was forced to agree to release three terrorists –Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, and Masood Azhar.

And then, IC 814 pilot, Captain Devi Sharan went on to write a book, ‘Flight Into Fear – The Captain’s Story’ on the ill-fated incident.

Now, ETimes has it that the ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ’83’ director Kabir Khan has been approached to be the showrunner for a web series based on the book ‘Flight Into Fear’. The show will be produced by Sanjay Routray (Matchbox Pictures Pvt Ltd).

We also hear Kabir has liked the idea and he and the OTT platform are in talks. The modalities are being worked out. If all goes well, this could be Kabir’s next assignment.

What is a showrunner? A showrunner is the person who has overall creative authority and management responsibility for an entire television series. He/she makes sure that scripts are finalised well, that budget is adhered to as prescribed by the line producer, that actors are happy and that the writers’ room is moving forward.
