Name one woman in your life you look up to and why.
I think it has to be my mother and my sister, both of them because, they’ve just been such an inspiration while growing up. I wanted to do everything that they did. They were my influencers and I’m so glad. It is because of my sister that I got into photography, and even dance and drama, mom was a teacher and she used to play the sitar, there were interior decoration books at home and then I then later got into NIFT. So I think I’m a culmination of my family and both my sister and my mother have taught me to always speak my mind, not be afraid and be who I am, even though it is different from everybody else. In fact, that difference should be celebrated.
Was there any barrier you faced in your career because you were a woman? How did you overcome it?
What’s happening in one’s career, is something that one faces in the society too. As women, there are a lot of battles that we have to win, be it physical or emotional. But the important thing to remember is what we tell ourselves, that we have to survive, we have to fight, we have to make a space for ourselves because every time we do that for ourselves, we are also encouraging and motivating other women to do so. And nobody can tell you what and how big your dreams can be. That is totally, totally in your control. Yes, you have situations and the people around you and the environment makes a difference, but you need to know who you are and it is a process, it takes time and there will be difficult moments, some very rewarding moments, but life is all of this. So just believe in yourself.
One thing you would change about the world for women, if you could?
I feel the statement ‘Be the change you want to see’ is extremely important. One should not think about changing others, but if we individually start behaving and start believing in the world we would like to live in, I think then change is possible. Why should we put this responsibility on others? I would love to be in a world where there is respect and love. I think a balance of that is very important. Growth is very important in any relationship and respecting your individuality and your dreams. Let’s spread love in the world and live life with happiness.
If you had to give one piece of advice to your younger self what would it be?
I just want to keep reminding myself not to take life too seriously. By that, I mean that there will be struggles and hardships, but they shape us. The milestones need to be celebrated, but every time we learn something, big or small, as long as there is growth. My dad told me one thing, ‘As long as you’re growing, it’s all right’. And I think as human beings, personal and professional growth can be different and hand in hand, both are very important to me personally, like mentally and physical health.
On Women’s day, one message for all the men out there?
I really want, want to say thank you to all the amazing men I have met, I have been blessed to meet in my life. I’ve met some very encouraging men, like my producers, directors, writers, my best friends, who have made me realize and understand and feel that my gender, my physicalities, my skin color, my religion does not define me. Who I am is what I believe in my core values, my heart and my actions. I really want to say thank you to all the men because it is a collaborative process, we have to coexist. And as long as we grow together, it will be a good journey. Hats off to them and a big thank you to them for being there. Be it my husband, who’s my best friend, or be it my father, who’s been my hero and always will be my, be it my father-in-law. I’m surrounded by great men. And I thank them that because I am what I am today definitely because of them.
