Love sagas, relationship secrets, mushy moments and political drama were all very well woven into the narrative of polished fancy weddings in ‘Made in Heaven’. Sobhila Dhulipala’s portrayal of an ambitious wedding planner Tara Khanna won a well deserved applause and today marks three years of this delicious drama.
Walking down memory lane, Sobhita shares, “I was very thrilled about the fact that this show had a social commentary on it, but at the same time, it’s palatable and aesthetic. It’s got elements that make it a fun watch, but at the same time, it sort of confronts people with reality. So I think that that balance between entertainment and political awareness, and the way it was put together was what made it a hit with the audience.”

Ask her if she resonates with the emotions and ambitions of Tara and the actress quips, “As an actor, every role that I play, I try to see what’s similar and what’s not, so that I can fill those gaps or those feelings. With Tara, I could resonate with the fact that she was ambitious and wanted to belong in a world. Because I moved to Mumbai when I was 16 for college and coming from Vizag, it was a huge shift. I had to put in a lot of effort, in my college years, to just sort of become a part of the social circle. It wasn’t a natural fit for me because I had a different make. So I resonate with the effort of Tara’s journey, trying to be part of a certain thing, but obviously our choices are very different. A lot of people see Tara in me, but for me, Tara is like my elder sister. It is so weird! I’m a very emotional-senti type person, I’m not this unapologetic, boss babe kind of person. I’m far more soft and sensitive. So when I’m going through shit, I tell myself, ‘Be like Tara’,” adds the actress.
The shooting for the second season began a year ago but the makers are yet to announce its final release date. Spilling the beans on what to expect from ‘Made in Heaven’ season 2, Sobhita says, “When the first season did really well, I think we gained certain confidence that this show is something that’s not only loved, but is also respected and waited for. So season 2 is like at least a good few levels up, in terms of plot and the cast. There are some big names associated with the second season. It is going to come soon but I don’t know when. Whenever it releases, it is going to be special.”

From ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’ (2016) to ‘Made in Heaven’ (2019) and now ‘The Night Manager’ remake, Sobhita is in a happy space following her passion. “Previously, the success of ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’, Cannes recognition, didn’t translate into large scale work opportunities or social standing at that time. But ‘Made in Heaven’ just changed things. It took me a while to get to a place where people saw me, my work and gave me appreciation. I think this sort of pushed me to keep my head down and continue doing what I do. I am not really attached to the result, because once you taste it, you realise, ‘oh, it feels nice’. And now I don’t have the obsession for it. Now I am interested in fully developed characters. It can be literally a five minute part, doesn’t matter, but it has to be a role that really matters. I’m that girl who at 16, sat in a train from Visakhapatnam and headed to Mumbai. I wanted to study, I had no aspirations to belong to the entertainment industry because I didn’t know anything about it. But at the end of college I took part in a pageant, I was curious, did some modeling and gave myself a time period, did auditions and when I finally got a film, I felt so connected to the craft. Maybe if I knew my passion before, I would have gone for it straightaway. But every journey is special because that’s your formula,” concludes Sobhita.
