Following the successful release of ‘The Gray Man’ this weekend, Netflix Inc announced its plans to turn the new spy thriller into a franchise.

The action movie starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in lead roles debuted as the No 1 movie in 92 countries, thus cementing plans for the IP to become a major spy franchise. According to reports, a sequel is now in development with Gosling and directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to return.

In an interview with ETimes, we asked Ryan if he thought his film could be the answer to the James Bond spy franchise. To this, he said, “As far as James Bond is concerned, that is such an iconic film franchise. But who knows? I would love to play this character again. I really like this character and I want to see how this story goes for him. It is left very open-ended and I would like to see what happens next and if he gets to sit on the couch and watch movies like the rest of us or not.”

Gosling stars in the film as Sierra Six, a former inmate sprung from prison by the CIA in exchange for servitude in a secret program.

Talking about the development of the sequel, Joe and Anthony Russo shared in a statement, “The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal. We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film. With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”

The company also announced a separate spinoff movie but did not provide details on the storyline or characters. Rumours are rife that like Gosling, Indian superstar Dhanush may also be back in action as the character, Avik San.

Speaking at a press conference, the Russo Brothers didn’t rule out Dhanush’s return when they said, “We have kept our opinions open to where Dhanush’s character goes from here in The Gray Man. We can’t reveal anything right now.”

A spin-off film, written by acclaimed screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, Zombieland) is set to explore a different element of The Gray Man universe. The logline is being kept under wraps.

The Gray Man is based on the best-selling book series by Mark Greaney.
