Camaraderie, diversity, gratitude at the National Film Awards 2020 – Times of India


The winners of the 68th National Film Awards were honoured in the capital by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday. This year’s selections were also hailed for honouring Indian cinema beyond language barriers.
In her speech, President Murmu said, “In our country, movies made in one region are becoming very popular in all other regions as well. In this way, Indian cinema is tying all the countrymen in a cultural thread. The film community has a huge contribution to Indian society. ”

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur added, “Yet again, the awards have brought out the regional strength of the country and reminded us how Indian cinema is brimming and blossoming with brilliance and talent. Films like Kachichinithu in Karbi, Testimony Of Ana in Dangi, and Semkhor in Dimasa are extraordinary displays of our linguistic wealth. ”

This year, the winners were picked from 305 feature films in 30 languages and 148 non-feature films in 28 languages. With agencies.

Veteran actress Asha Parekh was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. In her acceptance speech, she said, “It’s a huge honour to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. It makes me very grateful that the recognition comes to me just a day before my 80th birthday. It’s the best honour I could get from the Indian government. I have been in this industry for the last 60 years and continue to be attached to it in my own small way. Our film industry is the best place to be in, and I would like to suggest to industry youngsters to have perseverance, discipline, determination and be grounded. ”

Poonam Dhillon, who was one of the jury members for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, said, “Awards are always an honour, but when it is the National Film Award, then it is on a different level. I am on the jury, and it is indeed a tough job. ”

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior won three awards Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Best Actor and Best Costume Design.

Director Om Raut said, “Our film is on a Maratha lieutenant who was a subedar of Chhatrapati Shivaji. We titled it Tanhaji, The Unsung Warrior, but today, I can proudly say that Tanhaji is no more the unsung warrior. ”

Soorarai Pottru won five awards Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Background Score and Best Screenplay.

Director Sudha Kongara said, “You don’t expect five national film awards. I think it’s a common man story, and we could pick up that vibe in the film, and that’s why it resonated with the audience. ”

While Suriya received the Best Actor award for Soorarai Pottru, his actress-wife Jyotika received the Best Feature Film award for the same film. President Murmu also mentioned Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi.
She said, “I also believe that films which depict Indian values and stories are also commercially successful. For example, I would like to mention Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. The film won several awards and recognition across the globe. The biggest impact that the film had was that the respect for Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals became known further to the global community. ”
