Brian Gay CONFIRMS Gael Garcia Bernal’s ‘Werewolf by Night’ ushers in Marvel’s Monster World: Jack Russell is just the first – Exclusive – Times of India

Hear that? It’s the howl Marvel fans have been waiting for. Gael García Bernal will spring into action as Jack Russell in the upcoming Halloween special ‘Werewolf by Night’. Set for its highly anticipated debut on Disney+ Hotstar on October 7, the special will give fans a ‘first look’ into the Monster World that awaits them in the next phase of the MCU. Helping us navigate through the world of werewolves, vampires and creatures, was executive producer Brian Gay.

In a chat with ETimes, Brian answered our questions about the new monster in the world of superheroes, the possible timeline, Kevin Feige’s reaction to all the blood and gore in the special and of course, the things yet to come…

‘Werewolf by Night’ is nothing like anything we’ve seen before in the MCU. Why introduce Jack Russell in the form of a Halloween special rather than a web series?
It just felt like it was the right time. Disney+ has done long 10-episode series and 6-episode series, but we wanted to do a special, something that felt unique, a little bit shorter and gave Jack his time to shine. He is at the focal point of this whole special and more importantly, he is a part of this monster world of the MCU. This was our first look.

Monsters have been around for centuries, but we have been focused on superheroes, aliens, and other dimensions. But guess what! There are a whole bunch of monsters out there and he is just the first one that we are making.

When is it set in the MCU timeline?

We don’t know. I’m making a joke, but the point is that it feels like it could happen any time, right? We knew we had to introduce the idea of monsters, but I want people to be in that story with Jack and Elsa and wonder what’s going to happen. I want to feel like I am locked in this room with them and I’m going on the hunt with them. In doing so, we are purposefully vague about when it takes place because then it’s just one night and who knows when it happened! And when Jack’s going to get out… But, I am certain that he is going to be interacting with other parts of the MCU.

‘Werewolf by Night’ draws a lot of inspiration from horror films from 1930-1940. Not sure if Dracula makes a cameo in this one, but would you say that Marvel is ready to usher in the monsters and where can we expect to see Jack next?

I don’t know if we know where we will see Jack next because I don’t think Jack knows either. At the end of the special, you see that he went through a crazy night, can’t believe he made it out alive and the fun about that character is that he is just Jack.

I don’t know who he will run into next, but I am very excited to see it. I think Gael García Bernal gave such an excellent performance and it was so captivating to watch.

How do you think Gael García Bernal is the perfect fit for this part, what went into getting him on board?

Gael was on the top of our minds for this character. Michale, our director, had worked with him previously and he sort of knew that Gael had the capacity. When you look at his work, he is so thoughtful, and moving and gives such great performances. We knew that when we were introducing Jack, he is a wonderful soul and he is human at the core of it. Gael would come in and make sure that Jack was always accessible and connected with the audience in a way that you understand that he had these struggles too. So, it’s a big night for Jack and you really want to be on his side. After watching this, I can’t think of anyone else. He did an amazing job.

It’s the bloodiest Marvel film, but it’s in black and white. Does the MCU get gorier from here on? What was Kevin Feige’s reaction to this?

Kevin loves it and the reason is that it is all in the story. We talked about this. If we were going to put Jack and Elsa in a room with the fiercest monster hunters that had ever lived, then they are not going to sit around to have dinner, and they aren’t going to play a game of cards. They are going to hunt. They are going to attack each other and be very aggressive. When we were filming it, we thought that this just made sense. There is one thing that these characters do, they have one thing on their mind – getting the bloodstone – and they are going to stop at nothing to do it. When you think about that, you have to see them go after each other, you have to get a little bit scared. You have to wonder if they are all going to make it.
