Filmmaker Esmayeel Shroff is no more and his passing away has affected stars from the 80s and 90s the most. ETimes spoke to Govinda, whose debut film Love 86 was directed by Shroff. Expressing his grief, Govinda said, “I’m deeply saddened. My career started with his film. Uparwala unko jannat naseeb karaye (May the almighty guide his soul to heaven). May his soul rest in peace. Not only did he give me work, but he used to have faith in me, too. He was the first person in my life who said that Govinda understands cinema. He played a big role in making me Govinda from Govind.”
While Govinda and Shroff didn’t associate for a feature film again after Love 86, Govinda hadn’t stopped respecting and revering Shroff’s impact on his career. Esmayeel Shroff worked with lots of popular Bollywood stars like – Rajesh Khanna, Salman Khan, Dharmendra, Raaj Kumar, Amol Palekar, Shammi Kapoor and more.
Esmayeel also worked across genres, making commercial movies in different genres like action, romance, comedy and tragedy. His career was most prolific through the 80s and Shroff then eased up the pace through the 90s, managing to only direct 2 films through the 2000s.
