Zayn Marie Khan: Imran bhai is my favourite human being in the world; I am lucky that I have had him to guide me – Exclusive – Times of India

Despite hailing from a prestigious film family, Zayn Marie Khan is slowly but gradually carving her own path in the entertainment industry. After showing off her acting prowess in ‘Mrs Serial Killer’ and ‘Feels Like Ishq’, the young diva is all set to entertain her audience in ‘Monica, O My Darling’ and ‘Made In Heaven 2’. ETimes caught up with the budding actress for a freewheeling interview where she spilled the beans on being an accidental actor, her bond with Imran Khan, and pressures of being Aamir Khan’s niece. Excerpts…

How did you come on board for ‘Monica, O My Darling’? Tell us something about your character…

I got a call to audition for the film. I went in for the test. It was a really exciting scene. The scene I had to do was very high on emotion. I think I did it quite well. Then there was a second round of auditions that I went through. The makers liked it, so I got on board.

My character’s name is Sarika Vartak. She is a very sweet, family-oriented girl who gets caught up in a very dangerous situation. She is surrounded by dangerous people. It is all about how these situations impact her life.

How was it working with Rajkummar Rao and Huma Qureshi?

It was really wonderful working with them. The working styles of Rajkummar and I really matched. He is a fantastic actor. He would come on sets and want to do lines, and that is exactly what I like to do. So we had that comfort level right from the start because our working styles matched. It was wonderful to watch him and see what he does. Huma has a lovely energy. Whenever she walks into a room, she lights it up. She was the real fun element on the set.

You will also be seen next in ‘Made in Heaven 2’, which is one of the most anticipated shows. What can the audience expect from the second season?

I am sure ‘Made In Heaven 2’ is going to be even bigger than the first season. I cannot say much about that right now.

Did you always want to become an actor, or did you have other aspirations?

I did not want to be an actor at all, actually. I wanted to be a director or a producer. I think I would be very good at that. However, one day, when I was in college, I accidentally auditioned for a college play, and they put me on the stage. I’ve never been able to let go of the high I got from the audience’s reaction since I got on stage. It is one of the most beautiful things in my life.

Despite hailing from a film family, you are slowly but gradually creating your own space in the industry. How do you react to being called the ‘star kid’?

I find it quite funny because I don’t think I would classify myself as a star kid. I didn’t really grow up in the industry. I grew up on a mountain with cows and chickens. I feel like maybe we have a certain idea of what a star kid is like and I don’t really think I fit that bracket. Still if people want to call me a star kid then that is on them.

People often talk about the perks of being a star kid. What, according to you, is the disadvantage of belonging to a film family (if any)?

I think we can see this quite a bit, especially, right now, where there is a large amount of hate, trolling, and bullying that happens when somebody is related to somebody famous or is from a film family. That is something that is never okay, no matter where you come from. I think that is very harsh, and I hope no one ever has to go through something like that.

You are quite close to Imran Khan in your family. Tell us something about the bond you share with him.

Imran bhai is my favourite human being in the world. I took my first steps with him when I was a baby. He has always been my older brother. We grew up together in the same house. He is a sensitive, loving, and beautiful person. I have always looked up to him in terms of how I should be and treat other people. I think I am lucky that I have had him to guide me.

Although you are working at your own pace, do you sometimes feel pressured because you are Aamir Khan’s niece?

Yes, I do. It is not something that my family has put on me. However, it is a pressure that I have put on myself. I love them, I respect them. I have seen how much they love and respect their work. I don’t ever want to let them down. Now that they have seen my work, they have been very appreciative. I think my pressure lessened because now I know that they are proud of me. It means a lot to me.

What is your fondest memory of watching a film in a theatre?

The most special film that I ever saw in a theatre was ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na’ because it was an Imran Khan film who is my older brother and the most important person on earth to me. He was on this big screen and was receiving so much love. That was probably when I subconsciously thought maybe even I want to do this.

As far as we know, Ira Khan loves to be behind the camera. Would you like to be directed by her someday?

Yeah, I would love to be directed by her someday. I hope she will cast me. I think she would make a wonderful director. I also think that she would make a fantastic producer.

Apart from Aamir Khan, is there anybody in the industry you look up to?

I am a very big Zoya Akhtar fan. When I watched ‘Luck By Chance’, I felt the scene as an audience member. It is a film that really changed my life. Ever since then, I have always looked forward to her work. I really love her sensibilities when it comes to filmmaking.

How do you look at your journey in the entertainment industry so far?

I feel like I have come a really long way. I was trying to do something on my own, and I never thought I would be in the place that I am right now. I didn’t think that I would come this far, so I personally feel proud of myself.
