James Cameron’s sci-fi drama Avatar – The Way Of Water opened to a thunderous response globally. The film had a Rs 40 crore opening in India, whereas it raked in $17 million in the US. The film turned out to be second highest Hollywood opener of all time in India, being only behind Avengers Endgame.

On Day 2 Avatar 2 remained steady and collected over Rs 40 crore nett, reports Box Office India. Although it looks like there was no growth, it appears so because of the drop in collections in Nizam/Andhra and Kerala circuits that were way higher on Day 1. The collections dropped by around Rs 3.50 crore nett in the two circuits, but rest of the circuits showed good growth, especially Mumbai and North India, the report further stated.

In the Hindi circuits The collections jumped from Rs 18 crore nett on Friday to Rs 21 crore nett on Saturday. Mumbai witnessed a 30% jump in collections. The film now stands at a total collection of over Rs 80 crore nett and it is expected to earn about Rs 125 crore nett at the end of the first weekend.

Speaking to ETimes, exhibitor Akshaye Rathi said, “Avatar has clocked an opening day of over 40 crores in India, all languages and formats combined. This is among the biggest openers we have had this year, probably the third after RRR and KGF: Chapter 2. It has created a hurricane at the box office and going by the reports, I don’t see it stopping. But having said that, Cirkus has a fan base of its own. There are people who want to go and watch unabashed entertainment which Rohit Shetty provides unapologetically. I’m pretty hopeful that both films will have their own fan base and audiences which will co-exist in cinemas. I believe that this festive season, it’s important that as the exhibition sector, we provide a variety and diverse kind of content to every section of social strata. And with Avatar and Cirkus in place with Riteish Deshmukh’s Marathi film Ved coming right after, I’m sure the audiences will have great choices and a great time at the movies.”

Avatar 2 was headlined by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. Apart from the original cast, Kate Winslet joined the franchise as a new addition in Avatar: The Way of Water. The actress has reunited with James Cameron after Titanic. Speaking about the same at a press conference, Kate said, “Jim has always written for women, characters who are not just strong, but they are leaders, they lead with their heart, with integrity, they stand in their truth, they own their power. They have physical power that is admirable, and to be part of that, and included, it was just so flattering that Jim asked me, because Jim does not suffer fools, and I knew that he was asking me because he knew I was too damn foolish not to say, ‘oh, you see that in me? Well, guess what… I’m going to show you that I can do exactly that thing’. And of course, he expected no less. So I was just thrilled to be asked.”
