Karan Johar introduced three new faces to Bollywood with his 2012 directorial ‘Student Of The Year’. Debutants Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra were welcomed positively by the audience.
However, in a recent interview KJo revealed how the film faced losses, despite being a huge hit. The filmmaker stated that movies do well in terms of perception but don’t earn financially. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Karan Johar recalled how ‘Student of the Year’ had earned over Rs 70 crore at the box office but since he had spent ‘like crazy’ on the film, they were ‘down Rs. 15-20 crore’. Since the filmmaker had signed Alia, Sidharth and Varun for three-film contracts, they went on make films like ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ and ‘2 States’ with them, where the budgets were “at subsidized numbers because that was as our contract so eventually that shortfall actually got covered.”
Karan Johar is currently gearing up for his next directorial ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’, which features Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. This light hearted romantic entertainer is slated to hit the screens in April 2023.
