Mahesh Bhatt reveals Shabana Azmi did ‘Arth’ for free, brought clothes for Smita Patil and herself – Times of India



Mahesh Bhatt delivered a heart wrenching narrative with ‘Arth’, which detailed extra-marital affairs and emotions that were rarely witnessed on the big screen. Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Kulbhushan Kharbanda delivered iconic acts, which continue to tug at heartstrings even today.
In a recent interview, Mahesh Bhatt walked down memory lane and showered love on Shabana Azmi for delivering a heart-breaking performance in ‘Arth’. He highlighted the scene where Shabana’s character visits her husband, Kulbhushan’s girlfriend’s home and asks him to give her a second chance and return to her.

Mahesh Bhatt stated that Shabana Azmi immersed herself into the character and never lost the thread of emotion. At the end of the scene he saw the actress crumbling to the ground and falling to pieces, which was heartbreaking. The filmmaker told Pinkvilla that something about the scene had touched her. He credited Shabana for being his wings as he rose like a phoenix post the release of ‘Arth’.
Echoing his emotions, Shabana stated that Mahesh Bhatt is also a very generous person. She revealed how the filmmaker had told her to beg for her love and hold her tears. Calling it a challenging scene, Shabana stated that one has to experience the humiliation of begging to deliver such a part. Mahesh Bhatt also revealed that Shabana Azmi didn’t charge a penny for the movie and that she even brought her own clothes for the shoot. He also added that on several occasions Shabana went out of the way to source clothes for Smita Patil, who was considered her arch rival in the industry at that time.

‘Arth’ is said to be inspired from Mahesh Bhatt’s personal life. The film released in 1982 and is considered to be one of the most iconic films till date.
