HowIMadeIt! Priya Bapat: Playing a lesbian woman did not call for taking permission from my husband – Times of India

Priya Bapat, best known for her roles in Marathi movies like ‘Kaksparsh‘, ‘Aamhi Doghi’ and ‘Happy Journey’ (for which she won the Best Actress Maharashtra State Award) is our guest on #HowIMadeIt this week. Starting with Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ in Bollywood, she has now forayed into web shows like ‘City Of Dreams’ and has even signed an international film ‘Father Like’.

Priya says that despite her kitty being satisfactorily full, she still has to go through several auditions and rejections. “In fact, I got rejected even today,” she says honestly and smiles. Priyanka then says something very important: “Never neglect your studies, that will give you a backup plan just in case your acting career doesn’t shape up”.

Priya had her share of intimate scenes in ‘City of Dreams’ in which she played a lesbian. Did she require permission from her husband Umesh Kamat to play the role? “No, not at all. Umesh and I are in a relationship wherein we respect each other as human beings and artistes, both. We give each other full freedom, which is why my relationship with Umesh is what it is,” she says.

‘Father Like’ also has her playing a lesbian. “The film has been delayed due to the lockdown. I am looking forward to it. Let’s see when it begins,” says the lady, who is now called the ‘Fashion Queen’ of the Marathi industry.

And how did that title come about? “I don’t know if the fashion police still really like my fashion sense or not, as I had the worst fashion sense in my early days. I worked on it, with my sister from the fashion industry, who taught me everything–right down to walking comfortably in heels,” Priya concludes.
