Bollywood is often slammed for depicting stereotypical roles and characters in films. And the latest movie to face the ire of the audience is Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani starrer ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’. As soon as the film’s trailer was released, netizens took to Twitter to express their displeasure for stereotyping Tamil culture and adding references of Rajinikanth among other things.
“Stereotyping at its best (worst)! Another bollywood film to stereotype south indians as vegetarian, folk song listening, Rajinikanth loving, pretentious English speaking people. Grow up guys!” commented one user. While another netizen pointed out, “Insert Tamil songs, Tamil icons and Tamil culture (grossly stereotyped) to get some eyeballs, but the characters only speak in Hindi!! Chennai is just 2 hours away by flight from Bombay, one visit would have made the makers realise what an atrocity this is #MeenakshiSundareshwar.”
Directed by Vivek Soni, ‘Meenakshi Sundareshwar’ is produced by Karan Johar and is slated for release on a streaming platform next month.
