Aanand L. Rai on failure of ‘Zero’: It got a crash landing, but I’m proud of the film – Times of India

Filmmaker Aanand L. Rai is gearing up for the OTT release of his film ‘Atrangi Re‘. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush, and it is a unique love story. ETimes caught up with the filmmaker who spoke at length about completing a decade in the industry, working with some of the top names in the business, ‘Atrangi Re’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ and much more.

When asked why, according to him, ‘Zero’ did not work, he said, “It’s simple. I knew that ‘Zero’ will take off very well. Par uski landing gadbad ho gayi. Main land nahin kara paya. It got a crash landing. But I’m proud of the film. I learned a lot from the film.”

The Aanand L. Rai directorial ‘Zero’ that released in December 2018, starred Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in lead roles. While the film was praised for its visual effects and the performances of the actors, it was criticised for an inconsistent screenplay, and failed to recover its investment.

Talking about ‘Atrangi Re’, there is an interesting story behind the title. “Salman Bhai had the title registered to his production house but he gave it to me on one condition. He told his associates to give the title rights only if I direct the film, otherwise they wouldn’t have let it go,” Aanand L. Rai had earlier revealed to ETimes.

‘Atrangi Re’ was slated to release in theatres on February 14, 2021, however, it was indefinitely postponed due to post-production delays during the pandemic. The film will now premiere on an OTT platform on December 24, 2021.
