Sanjay Leela Bhansali says ‘We represent Indian cinema, Bollywood is a very quaint term’ at the Berlinale – Times of India

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and actress Alia Bhatt’s highly anticipated ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ recently had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival 2022. Having said that, during a press conference at the event, Bhansali spoke about the representation of Indian cinema, at a global level.

Sharing the video on Instagram, the official page of Bhansali Productions wrote, “Representing Indian Cinema at the world stage with pride #GangubaiKathiawadi in cinemas on 25th Feb.”

In the video Bhansali admitted that Indian cinema, which is a world of it’s own, is widely regarded as Bollywood, and it’s wrong to use that term. While addressing the media, he said “A Hindi, Malayalam or Telugu film is an Indian film. Bollywood is a very quaint term. It’s Indian cinema for which we come here, we stand and represent it to the world. Indian cinema has got so many languages. It’s a world of its own”.

He continued, “To just call it Bollywood would be wrong. I appreciate the fact that you have recognised that it’s Indian cinema that we talk about.”

Gangubai Kahiawadi, which is all set to release on February 18, stars Ajay Devgn, Parth Samthaan, Shantanu Maheshwari and Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles.
