Somy Ali on her comeback: I would rather director than act, unless I can give the audience something they’ve never seen before -Exclusive – Times of India

Somy Ali has made a comeback of sorts with the docu-series Fight Or Flight, which details her vigil to save domestic abuse victims as well as rescue sex trafficking survivors. The series has recieved glowing reviews and Somy is ecstatic about the buzz. She says, “I faced the camera after 22 years, but it felt different than acting in a Hindi film as I had the liberty to be me, just literally be Somy Ali.”

She is most content with the positive impact it’s had on her organization No More Tears’ functioning. She reveals, “I can’t believe the response we are getting from all over the United States. People are donating like crazy and buying our t-shirts in support. Many victims are sharing their stories and we have had only a few episodes aired thus far. The response was shocking after just three episodes in and that too for a docu series which features me being completely unscripted.”

Having aced an exciting return to the screens, Somy is not really keen on acting as much as she’s itching to tell stories. She says, “I am keen on directing as my educational background is in psychology, broadcast journalism and film. Additionally, I have been wanting to direct a script that I have been working on for three years and I am unsure if there is an actor and actress that would be willing to get involved in the subject as it’s quite controversial, but extremely timely.”

Twenty two years is a long time staying away from the front of a camera. But with her return, Somy was hardly nervous. She says, “It felt a little weird at first because I am used to working alone, except when I rescue victims with the police or in sex trafficking the FBI agents. But after a week of shooting Fight Or Flight, it felt like the crew was not even there and I went along my day as usual.”

Somy’s show is currently airing on an international OTT platform and she feels this new-age of internet media has changed the horizons of entertainment. She says, “The OTT boom has opened doors for actors and filmmakers to be bold because back in the day they were unable to do so. The entire system of storytelling has evolved into something unique where actors are uninhibited and so are filmmakers. This is the right time for intellectual artists and makers to come out and display their work.”

Having left Indian shores for the US a while ago, Somy is now anxious to get back to the Bay, but for recreation only. She reveals, “Right now, I am bound by a three year contract with Discovery+, but there will be time off after the first season. I will certainly take advantage and visit Mumbai as a tourist to revisit many places and people whom I have not seen in years.”

On the subject of Bollywood, we ask Somy if she’s willing to be courted by the production houses of Sanjay Leela Bhasali, Karan Johar and Yash Raj Films. She says, “I respect all of them and their art immensely. It’s priceless in their own forums. I follow films that come highly recommended to me by my friends. Again, I would rather direct than act unless there is a significantly unconventional role and a script. It all depends upon what we can introduce the viewers to that they have not already seen.”
