Karan Johar on Bollywood’s downfall; blames paid PR, says filmmakers from down South do not seek validation – Times of India

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has time and again been vocal about the Bollywood industry and how it’s navigating it’s progress especially with the ongoing North vs South debate. Karan shares that the main reason for Bollywood industry’s downfall is their incessant need for validation, and the too much paid PR which comes with it.

In an interview with a news portal Karan states that filmmakers down south have ‘ample conviction’ in their projects and ‘do not seek validation’. He feels that, they as an industry (Bollywood) are victis of everything they should have been running away from, like paid PR, groupism and herd mentality. He added that South filmmakers have a lot of conviction and belief in their sensibilities which is just not present within the cinema made in the north and they just hop on whatever trend is popular.

Karan further opened up on how he himself looked for acceptance from other, when he decided to get into a different genre of filmmaking different from he was making earlier. “When I saw movies like Lagaan getting nominated at the Oscars, I also tried to win awards with My Name is Khan but eventually realised that I was neither here nor there with my films, so I went back to making the films I was passionate about. ”

Meanwhile on the work front, Karan is currently working on his directorial next ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’ starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. The film is slated to release next year.
