Kapur, who has won quite the fan-following for his ‘desi Hulk’ getup in Episode 2, got candid with ETimes about all the love he has been receiving since the series debuted early this month. “It is all very surprising because typically when you do a supporting role of a father, you don’t expect to get so much appreciation and accolades,” Kapur says and goes on to add, “What I am getting is unreal. I go like ‘What? Really? Are they watching the same thing that I performed in?’ My friends told me that my life would change after this because Marvel has a completely different and loving fanbase. I guess they have been proven right and I don’t know how to react.”
If you thought it was just the desi community showering the actor with love, you thought wrong. “The amazing thing is that the love is coming from different parts of the world. It is coming from Hollywood, Spain, Italy, Africa, and all kinds of places where you didn’t realise they watch this show. The fact that they are appreciating a fatherly character is amazing,” he says.
Speaking of community and family, Mohan thinks it is ‘this family as a unit’ that the writers created, which makes the story relatable, fresh and new.
“You don’t see South-Asian families getting represented in a Hollywood story and especially not a Marvel story. I watched episode 4 with a friend and I asked ‘Did you ever think that Hollywood and Marvel will have Hindi music playing in it?’ That is insane,” Kapur says.
Now that he is officially the first Indian actor part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we had to ask if we will see more of him as Yusuf Khan in Kamala’s first big-screen venture – ‘The Marvels’. “Oh yeah!” he says with a grin and goes on to reveal details from the upcoming Brie Larson lead film.
“The Khan family is very intrinsic to the ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel that is called ‘The Marvels’. We are going to London to complete the film. The Khan family is there while their daughter is saving the universe,” Mohan reveals.
Sharing some comical tidbits of all that’s in store for this family and their superhero daughter, Kapur adds, “The Khan family is a typical South-Asian family. ‘Arey mera baccha kaha jaa raha hai?’… ‘Beta kuch khaya? Sleep on time han…’ all this while she is out saving the world.”
‘The Marvels’ that is slated for a release in 2023 will be a sequel to the billion-dollar ‘Captain Marvel’ film. The movie is touted to bring together Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Kamala Khan (Ms Marvel) and Monica Rambeau together on the big screen for the first time. While Brie’s ‘Captain Marvel’ debuted on the big screen, Iman’s ‘Ms Marvel’ was introduced in her stand-alone series and Teyonah Parris’ Monica was introduced in the Emmy-winning series ‘WandaVision’ starring Elizabeth Olsen in the lead.
