Abhishek Bachchan cheers for wife Aishwarya Rai’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’, calls it a ‘masterpiece’ – Times of India


Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ hit the screens on Friday and was massively welcomed by fans. Cheering for his wife was Abhishek Bachchan, who gave a shout out to the film, ahead of its release. Calling it a ‘masterpiece’, Abhishek wrote in one of his Instagram stories, “The day is finally here! #PS1 in theaters today, congratulations to the team who’ve put in years of hard work and excellence in making this masterpiece. Best wishes to #PonniyinSelvan1 #AishwaryaRaiBachchan #ManiRatnam.” Aishwarya Rai Bachchan returned to entertain on the big screen after a gap of four years, her last release being ‘Fanney Khan’ in 2018.

Speaking about reuniting with her ‘guru’ Mani Ratnam for ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’, Aishwarya had previously shared, “It has always been a pleasure working with Mani Ratnam. Let it be my first film or this, there has been no change even after so many years while working with him. I would like to thank him for introducing me to the cinema through ‘Iruvar’. He has been my teacher and will continue to be so.” According to early estimates, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ has raked in close to Rs 20 crore at the box office on its first day.

‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ narrates a fictional story of the Chola Dynasty. The makers are planning to release the second part of the movie in the next nine months. Apart from Aishwarya, the film also features Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Sarathkumar, Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Sobhita Dhulipala among others. The film was be released in five languages – Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, and Kannada.
