‘Ponniyin Selvan’ Box office collection day 1: Mani Ratnam’s directorial gets a massive opening – Times of India


The most anticipated Tamil film ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ was released in theatres on September 30. Directed by Mani Ratnam, the film is Pan Indian and it was released in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada worldwide. Featuring Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Trisha in the lead roles, the movie is a historic epic drama that is fiction from the time period of the 9th century AD.

The movie is adapted from the novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ written by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The film has received mostly positive responses from the fans and even the film critics have praised the director for trying to portray the movie as much as possible as the real novel. The film reportedly made a pre-sales of Rs 15 crore worldwide, and with the booking made for the film on its day of release, it was expected that the movie will gross over Rs 50 crore at the box office. However, the official numbers of the box office collection made are yet to be announced by the producer.

Analysts suggest that the movie has reportedly made the biggest opening in the history of Tamil cinema. According to reports, the Hindi version of the film has made a gross earning of Rs 1.5 crore and the film has also performed well in Kerala with a box office of Rs 2.5 crore.

The film apart from India has also performed well in the USA, Malaysia, and Canada. The rest of the cast includes Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prabhu, Parthiban, Nasser, Prakash Raj, Kishore, Vikram Prabhu, and Rahman. The music for the movie is composed by AR Rahman.

With the predictions from analysts, it is expected the film will become a major blockbuster by breaking all the records previously set by Kollywood with its box office collection in the first week of its release.
