In a recent interview with Kamiya Jani for a joint interview on Sunday Brunch and The Bombay Journey, the actor spoke about how Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya was path-breaking for him as an actor, yet it put him in a box and he was offered only negative roles till long after the movie came out. He said, “After Satya, the industry looked at me as a new villain. I kept saying I won’t do villain (roles). After Satya, I was out of work for eight months.”
He further went on to add, “I had a lot of offers and they were all opposite superstars as a villain. But I had thought of something else. It was tough to say no to that much of money and work. I didn’t have both before Satya, and I was saying no to both after Satya. I didn’t know whether I was right in doing that.”
Eventually, the actor went on to do path-breaking movies like Shool, Aligarh and Sonchiriya.
The actor is now geared up for his next, Gulmohar, that is extremely close to his heart as it is a moving tale of a family, headed by a matriarch, who has decided to sell their ancestral home. Gulmohar co-stars Sharmila Tagore, Suraj Sharma, Simran and Amol Palekar. Directed by Rahul V. Chittella, it will stream on a leading OTT platform from March 3.
