Throwback: When Kajol had to turn down Mani Ratnam because she had committed herself to Karan Johar for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – Times of India

Kajol and Karan Johar, who have been friends since decades, have had their share of ups and downs but the two remain as thick as ever. In a old interview with Simi Garewal, Karan Johar had reminisced about his relationship with her and how she let go off a Mani Ratnam movie just because she had committed her dates to Karan’s directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Speaking to Simi, Karan said that Kajol had always wanted to work with Mani. He said, “She had told me she wished to work with him once. She just loved Mani Ratnam. We had discussed Mani Ratnam so much that when he actually called her, she didn’t believe it. She just said, ‘Shut up, Karan’ and disconnected the call. He called her up again and told her, ‘No, this is really Mani Ratnam.’ ” Incidentally, the Mani Ratnam film offered to her was also against Shah Rukh Khan, her co-star in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Adding to the story, Karan said, “I called Kajol and said I will let go of my dates and will start my film later, how can you not do Mani Ratnam film? But for her, it was like, ‘I don’t care who has offered me what, it’s your film and I have committed to you’. The sentiment was that. For her, it was not a big deal. But that’s what made a difference for me. I just kind of understood what kind of a person she is.”

Apart from Kuch Kuch Hota hai, Karan and Kajol have worked together in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… and My Name Is Khan.
