There are reports in sections of the entertainment media claiming that Tamil superstar Suriya will be making his “Bollywood debut” in Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra’s adaptation of the Mahabharat. This is not only factually incorrect but highly premature.
A source very close to the project informs, “Yes, Mehra is planning his own take on the Mahabharat. And yes, he has started preliminary talks with Suriya to play Karn. However nothing has been decided as yet. The project is far from being locked in.”
The crucial casting of Lord Krishna would determine which way the project goes.
Mehra is the third major producer-filmmaker to try his luck with the Mahabharat. Earlier SS Rajamouli and Aamir Khan also showed an interest in adapting the Mahabharat to the screen. While Aamir has since then dropped the project, Rajamouli is still looking at making the Mahabharat some time in the future.
Incidentally, it is wrongly reported that Suriya would be making his Bollywood debut with Mehra’s project: Suriya made his Hindi-language debut in Ram Gopal Varma’s Rakta Charitra.
