MUMBAI: Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned actor Ranbir Kapoor on October 6 in a money laundering case connected to Mahadev Online Book gaming-betting app. Source said that Kapoor had promoted one of the gaming-betting app of the Mahadev group.
Mahadev group promoters, Saurabh Chandrakar and his friend Ravi Uppal, had hired several celebrities and social-media influencer to promote their gaming-betting apps after paying them. Most of the payment were made in cash. ED likely to summon most of them for their statement in the case.
The ED is investigating a money laundering case against Mahadev Online Book, operated by Chandrakar and Uppal who hail from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh and now based in Dubai. The ED investigation found that the two had earned several thousand crores in the last few years through illegally run gaming-betting apps. After recent ED action all the key players in India have shifted to Dubai, said sources.
Mahadev Online Book made Dubai as its headquarter and was running its operation in India with the help of panel operators. Chandrakar and Uppal had trained many youths from Bhilai at Dubai about handling the app users after maintaining secrecy and keeping records of collected money. Now, all the panel operators are under the ED scanner in the case, along with two hawala operators in Kolkata and Gujarat. Most of them have reportedly shifted to Dubai to avoid ED action.
Recently the ED had registered a money laundering case against Mahadev Online Book along with its promoters, based on separate FIRs registered against them in Chhattisgarh and Visakhapatnam. On August 21 to 23, the ED had searched multiple locations in the case, including in Kolkata, Bhopal, Mumbai, and had arrested Assistant Sub-inspector of Chhattisgarh police Chandrabhushan Verma, Satish Chandrakar and hawala operators Anil Dammani and Sunil Dammani in the case.
