Known for her versatility and ability to bring to screen relatable slice-of-life stories and even play some edgy characters, Huma Qureshi has created a space for herself in Bollywood. A rank outsider, her journey hasn’t been easy, but that didn’t deter her from dreaming big. In a chat with us, she spoke about how she believes in building an empire over inheriting one. She expressed, “I don’t belong to a film family, but Saqib (brother Saqib Saleem) and I are creating our film family. Nobody helped us, planned a film for us or launched us. I sometimes ask Saqib, ‘We are siblings who are in the movie business, does that make us a film family now (smiles)?’ He says, ‘Our respective children might have that privilege’.”
Talking about how acting aspirants are often blinded by the glamour of the profession and often overlook the challenges they have to face, ‘Monica, O My Darling’ actress explains, “Acting like any other job is exhausting. There are tough days when your body hurts, there are long shifts, late nights and hopping on to flights; I just tell myself, “Roz subah utho aur kaam pe jao.” Just do your work, and one day you’ll make it. Don’t overthink things.”
She added, “I have a very middle-class, hard-working mentality. I believe that I have to slog to make things happen. There is no such thing as overnight success. There has been no one life-changing moment for me. You don’t wake up one day and suddenly find appreciation; it takes years of quiet, hard work and consistent daily learning from your mistakes for that to happen. This part of your life is not spoken about.”
