Shaheen Bhatt, known for her candid discussions about mental health recently shared her journey of battling depression and how her family’s support played a significant role. During an interview with Bollywood Bubble, she revealed that it took her approximately five years to open up to her family about her struggles with depression.
Shaheen disclosed that her experience with depression began at a very young age, around 12 years old.She emphasised that back then, there was a lack of emotional vocabulary, and depression was not a widely discussed topic, especially as she was growing up. This made it difficult for her to understand what she was going through and why she felt consistently sad while others around her seemed happy. She felt like an outcast and was unable to comprehend the situation. Over time, she gradually accepted the label of depression and changed her perception of it, overcoming the negative associations she had.
Explaining her journey of revealing her depression to her family, Shaheen expressed that it wasn’t a specific “breaking the news” moment because her family had noticed her emotional struggles. Her teenage years were marked by isolation and spending a lot of time alone in her room. This behaviour was a telltale sign that something wasn’t right. Eventually, through therapy and understanding her condition, she and her family collectively learned about depression. Their unwavering support helped Shaheen in her battle, and she mentioned that she has since learned to cope better with her mental health challenges.
Notably, in 2019, Shaheen Bhatt authored a book titled “I’ve Never Been (Un) Happier,” where she delves into her personal journey with depression and mental health.
