Priyanka Chopra‘s role in the 2008 film Fashion, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, is considered one of the standout performances in her career. Her portrayal of Meghna Mathur, a small-town girl who aspires to become a successful supermodel in the competitive fashionindustry, was widely praised for its depth and authenticity. But many might not know that people had cautioned Priyanka to star in this film.
At the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023, Priyanka recalled the time when she was advised not to take up Fashion. She said that before Krrish and Aitraaz, the struggle to survive in Bollywood was always there. She would keep thinking about what’s the next movie she’s going to do, adding that she picked from what came to her.
“After Aitraaz and Krrish, I had done work which gave me a solid foundation. I got critical acclaim. I had people telling me ‘I know my job’, even though I didn’t know I knew my job. That is when I started seeking work that would challenge me,” she said.Priyanka then revealed that when decided to do Fashion right after Krrish, she was told, “‘Ladkiyan (leading actress) female-oriented films career ke end mein karti hai, National Award ke liye (actresses take up female-oriented films at the end of their careers for National Award). You have just done Krrish, Aitraaz, female-oriented films kyu kar rahe ho’. Uss zamane mein itna hota bhi nahi tha (Back then, there were not many female-centric films).”
She further asserted that she loved the script and Madhur’s vision for Fashion and called the movie a passion project. She also said that she didn’t imagine that the film would become so big.
Priyanka’s performance in Fashion earned her numerous accolades, including the National Film Award for Best Actress. She also received several other awards and nominations for her remarkable portrayal, solidifying her status as one of the most talented and versatile actresses in Bollywood.
