When Matthew Perry’s battle with addiction reflected in select episodes of Friends – Times of India

Fans of Mathew Perry were in for a rude shock last week when the news of his sudden demise took over the internet. It’s been four days since Perry, popularly known as Chandler Bing from Friends, was found dead in his hot tub. Though he was known to have had a long struggle with addiction, including alcoholism and opioid dependence, initial toxicology reports have ruled out the presence of two major drugs in his body.
Perry, 54, openly spoke about his struggle with addiction, and he had successfully made it into a phase of recovery and sobriety.
Fans who swear by the episodes of the popular sitcom will possibly know how the ups and downs of Matthew Perry‘s addictions were cleverly reflected in scattered episodes of the show which ran for a decade. We list down six such episodes:
The One At The Beach
Matthew Perry had revealed to journalist Diane Sawyer that he appeared scarily thin in the finale of season three (The One At The Beach) because back then he was taking as many as 55 Vicodin a day! “It’s very hard to watch,” said Perry as he got emotional in his interview that was aired last year.
The One With A Chick And A Duck
Well this season three episode of Friends was all fun and games till we found out what Perry was going through in that period. In the same interview with Sawyer, Perry revealed that another sign of his extreme drug addiction was his facial hair. “When I have a goatee, it’s a lot of pills,” he said.
The One With The Proposal
This special episode from season six may have been an incredible moment for Chandler Bing, but could it be any more paradoxical that Matthew Perry was going through an extremely low point due to his addiction. When Chandler proposes to Monica, Perry was red-faced and overweight because of his drinking. So much so that he was hospitalised right after filming the episode due to alcohol-induced pancreatitis.
The One With Monica’s Thunder
Season seven picked up right where season six ended, which means Chandler wore the same clothes, albeit he looked much thinner due to his hospitalisation. “I must have lost three and a half stone in the off-season,” revealed Perry.
The One With Monica and Chandler’s wedding
This was perhaps one of the most taxing episodes to film as Perry was in a rehab centre. A studio technician had to drive him in a pick-up truck from Malibu to the Friends set and back again. A visibly tired Perry could not hide the bags under his eyes in this episode.
The One With The Donor
After filming season 8, Perry went back to rehab. By season 9, he was sober and looked much healthier, especially in this episode where Chandler and Monica plan their family together.
