Suneel Darshan, the producer behind Priyanka Chopra’s breakout Bollywood film, ‘Andaaz,’ unveiled intriguing insights into the actor’s early days in the industry. Despite being hailed as the ‘Desi Girl,’ Priyanka Chopra initially lacked the quintessential Bollywood dance flair, as revealed by Darshan in a recent interview.
The 2003 romantic musical, which marked the debut of both Lara Dutta and Priyanka after their beauty pageant triumphs, also featured Akshay Kumar in a leading role.According to Darshan, during the filming of a dance sequence in South Africa for ‘Andaaz,’ it became evident that Priyanka Chopra lacked the distinctive Bollywood ‘lachak,’ or fluidity in dance moves.
Darshan recounted how the majority of the initial work for the film took place in South Africa, where they confronted Priyanka Chopra’s need for improvement in Bollywood-style dancing. He shared that they realised that her Bollywood dance style wasn’t too satisfying. They were filming the song ‘Allah Kare Dil Na Lage,’ and coincidentally, on September 15, 2002, Akshay Kumar’s first son was born.
The situation prompted a hiatus in shooting, with the team relocating to Mumbai for a reconsideration. Recognising Priyanka Chopra’s untapped potential and her unyielding dedication, Darshan enrolled her in a rigorous month-long training programme under choreographer Veeru Krishnan upon their return to Mumbai.
Describing Priyanka Chopra’s commitment, Darshan emphasised her determination and hunger for improvement, remarking, “The girl had incredible passion and determination; I knew she would be able to do anything.”
