Two much anticipated movies – ‘Animal‘ and ‘Sam Bahadur‘ – have hit the marquee today. There’s a huge difference in the number of screens in which these films are released. Moreover, the advance bookings have led to a huge difference in the ticket prices. For instance, the ticket price of ‘Animal’ at a Metro Inox multiplex in the night show for a normal seat (not recliner) is Rs 640.But the ticket price for the same seats for ‘Sam Bahadur’ is Rs 470. This difference is huge. Meanwhile, in some theatres, like Insignia, the ticket price has gone up to Rs 2200-2500.
Reacting to this, trade analyst Komal Nahta tells ETimes, “First of all, the advance booking of ‘Animal’ is so good. No cinema is foolish enough to give the same number of shows to both the films. Obviously, the demand for Animal is 10 times, 12 times, 15 times more than that. So they will get more shows. I noticed that the ticket prices of Animal at INOX and PVR are up to Rs 2,400 and Rs 2,500 also. Everything is governed by the demand. So the fact that the ticket price is high, means that the craze for ‘Animal’ is outstanding and that reflects in the price. But this comparison is wrong because it’s like comparing ‘namkeen’ with ‘meetha’.”

CEO, PVRINOX Pictures, Kamal Gianchandani reacts and says, “Prices of Animal is similar to all the other big films we’ve had. We have variable ticket prices across cinemas, across shows. In certain cinemas we’ve got differential pricing and this could be a local decision by the cinema team. But the ticket price of ‘Animal’ is the same as ‘Jawan’, ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Gadar 2’.”
However, in the single screens, the ticket price is the same for both movies. Manoj Desai, Executive Director, Gaiety Galaxy and Maratha Mandir cinema confirms, “We have not increased the ticket price in our theatres.”

Well, this difference in the price and number of screens will surely reflect in the box office numbers. Hence, it’s best to not compare these two movies and let them flourish in their own respective spaces.
