
Raaj Kumar, originally born as Kulbhushan Nath Pandit, had a unique journey into the world of acting. Prior to his career in cinema, he served as an IAS Sub-inspector in the Mumbai Policeduring the late 1940s.His entry into the film industry was serendipitous when, during a visit to Metro cinema, veteran filmmaker Sohrab Modi spotted him and extended a film offer. Despite initially declining, Raaj Kumar eventually embraced acting with his debut film “Rangeeli” in 1952, marking the beginning of his illustrious career on the silver screen.
Raaj Kumar left an indelible mark on Indian cinema with his notable performances, including a role in the Oscar-nominated 1957 film “Mother India.” Over the course of a career that spanned more than four decades, he graced the screens in over 70 Hindi films. His exceptional acting skills were recognized with a Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of a cancer patient in the movie “Dil Ek Mandir.” Raaj Kumar’s cinematic legacy remains celebrated and enduring in the annals of Bollywood.
Raaj Kumar and Dilip Kumar shared screen space in the movie Saudagar after 30 years. However, it is well-known that during the shooting of the film they never talked to each other except for their scenes.
He died of throat cancer at the age of 69 on July 3, 1996.
