Darr turns 30: When Aamir Khan turned down the antagonist role that went to Shah Rukh Khan; film historian Dilip Thakur REVEALS more – Exclusive | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Darr, a film that not only marked a significant milestone in Shah Rukh Khan‘s career but also left an indelible mark on the Bollywood landscape. Released in 1993, the psychological thriller directed by Yash Chopra was a game-changer, not just for its gripping narrative but for Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of an obsessive lover.
As the film celebrates its glorious 30 years in the Hindi cinema on December 24, film historian Dilip Thakur has shared some interesting anecdotes about the casting of the film.”Yash Chopra started Darr after Lamhe turned out to be a flop. Rishi Kapoor was the first choice because he had acted in Chopra’s Chandni. Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff rejected the offer and eventually Sunny Deol agreed to play the role. Divya Bharti was rumoured to be cast in Darr but it did not materialize. Juhi Chawla was signed,” he revealed.
He further added, “Sudesh Berry said no to play the role which eventually went to Shah Rukh Khan. Aamir Khan’s controversy created a lot of buzz because he said no to play a negative role. Shah Rukh was shooting in Lonavala where Yash Chopra went to meet him and sign him. It was a huge opportunity for Shah Rukh.”

The film’s trailer created havoc. Shah Rukh’s k-k-k-k-kiran had Deewana’s spell over it. The young audience of the 90s took an instant liking to this aggressive lover. They found that lover in SRK. The catchphrase became such a hit among the audience and SRK became a star. The film’s trailer was the high point for the film. The songs also became hits.

“There’s a Darr trailer that has only the sound without any dialogue. And the other trailer has only songs which see Juhi Chawla with Sunny Deol as well as Shah Rukh Khan. The first impressions were that it was a love triangle. But when the film came out none of the senior reviewers liked Darr because they had Lamhe’s Yash Chopra in their minds,” Thakur added.

Sunny had reportedly said that Yash Ji tricked him. Sunny and Shah Rukh did not speak after that till they united at Gadar 2’s success party. Darr was a trendsetter in Hindi cinema.
