After fans and celebrities seemingly banded together to voice their anger about the investigations in drugs case that allegedly pushed the actor to take the drastic step and end his life, media outlet Dispatch stirred up quite the storm on Thursday morning by calling the late actor a ‘sacrificial lamb’.
The media outlet raised concerns about the Incheon Metropolitan Police’s Drug Crime Investigation Division’s handling of the late actor’s case, suggesting that he may have been a victim in the department’s “war against drugs” campaign. Drawing parallels to an earlier case involving musician G-Dragon, the outlet pointed out ‘flaws’ since the start of the police’ investigative process. According to ‘Dispatch,’ the Incheon Metropolitan Police’s Drug Crime Investigation Division stumbled upon Lee Sun-kyun while probing another drug case at an adult entertainment establishment in Gangnam.
It alleged that information provided by a person ‘A’ a manager at the establishment, led the police to tap on Lee Sun-kyun’s door back in October 18. The reports claimed that the actor had administered illegal drugs, including marijuana, on multiple occasions at ‘A’s’ residence in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, and at a Gangnam establishment back in June 20, 2023.
The report contends that the investigation took a questionable turn on October 19, and that Lee Sun-kyun became a ‘sacrificial lamb’ for both ‘A,’ seeking leniency, and the Incheon police eager to demonstrate action to higher-ups.
The report suggests that ‘A’ had six previous convictions related to illegal drug use and, after receiving 300 million KRW by blackmailing Lee Sun-kyun, provided the actor’s name to the police.
It goes on to note that despite drug tests on Lee Sun-kyun coming back with negative results, he continued to be interogated. In November, public criticism mounted for the perceived ‘lack of reliable evidence’ prompting multiple drug tests on the actor and fellow accused, G-Dragon.
On December 26, JTBC reported a statement obtained from the police, asserting that Lee Sun-kyun claimed he was administered a substance, ‘believing it to be sleep medication’. Around the same time, the late actor had requested a lie detector test to verify information provided by ‘A’, prompting further concerns that there were unterior motives behind the case.
It is being alleged that ‘A’ sought ways to “sell someone out,” and the Incheon police, aiming to demonstrate “performance” for its failed nationwide “War against Drugs” campaign, allegedly collaborated with the media to shift attention to a high-profile drug case.
Dispatch contended that, faced with Lee Sun-kyun’s repeated negative drug test results, the Incheon police leaked details about his private life to salvage his public image.
The report also raised questions about the integrity of the investigation and the potential consequences of a campaign-driven approach to law enforcement.
It must be noted that despite Lee Sun-kyun’s shocking demise by apparent suicide, on December 27, the Incheon police maintain that there were ‘no issues’ in their investigation.
