Akhtar acknowledged the shift in movie narratives, noting an increase in meaningless violence. He suggested that this trend indicates a level of frustration in people that finds an outlet through violent films. He questioned the source of this violence within individuals, asking why it appeals to them and what underlying anger or emotion it represents.
The veteran writer believes that a calm and content society would not gravitate towards such violent content. He views this trend as a form of catharsis, where people are finding release and satisfaction through the on-screen violence. Akhtar called for a deeper understanding of the societal unrest reflected in these films.
Additionally, Akhtar highlighted the significant role of commercial cinema in mirroring the collective dreams and nightmares of society. He urged people not to underestimate the impact of commercial cinema, as it is intricately linked with societal dynamics. According to Akhtar, the hero of contemporary commercial cinema often doesn’t hail from the working class, is wealthy, lacks a job, and is detached from the country’s problems.
He pointed out the isolation in the narratives, where personal issues take precedence over social or political concerns. Akhtar argued that the hero of such films is usually affluent and disconnected from the challenges faced by the common people. He emphasized the importance of understanding the restlessness and problems of a society that consumes such films.
