‘Parasite‘ actor Lee Sun Kyun’s untimely demise on December 27, 2023 came as a huge shocker for the industry and his fans. At the time of his demise, he was being investigated for his association to an alleged drugs probe. Weeks after his death, it is being reported that several several Korean filmmakers have united to form an organisation, calling a probe into Lee Sun-kyun‘s death.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a newly formed organization by the name of Association of Solidarity of Cultural Artists has issued a statement in the matter. ‘Parasite’ director Bong Joon-ho is also a part of this initiative. “We have all come together under the firm conviction that no such incident should ever take place again, after facing the tragic death of actor Lee Sun-kyun. We will call for a probe to discover the truth [of Lee’s death], request media outlets to delete articles that do not fulfill their function as journalism, as well as urge authorities to revise the law to protect the human rights of artists,” the organization was quoted by THR. A press conference will also be reportedly hosted to address the organisation’s views and Oscar award winning filmmaker Bong is expected to attend the same.
Soon after Lee Sun-kyun’s demise, his agency announced that they intent to take legal action against the spread of false information. HODU&U Entertainment had said in a statement, “Recently, our agency recognized the fact that rumors and false information about our agency’s actors are being circulated. We began collecting relevant data and decided to take legal action at the same time. In the future, we will take firm action against all situations where false information is spread. In addition, we express our deepest regret over the malicious and indiscreet reports regarding the late actor Lee Sun Gyun by some media outlets over the past three months. We hoped that the truth would be revealed through a fair police investigation until the end, but since we can no longer do so, we would like to correct the facts one by one by ourselves.”
