A disturbing video depicting a man mercilessly beating a dog has sparked widespread outrage after it went viral on social media. The incident reportedly occurred at a pet shop located on GB Road in the city, according to authorities.
Nilesh Bhange, a prominent member of the animal rights organization PAWS, along with several others, approached the Kasarwadavli police station to lodge a complaint regarding the incident.As a result, a non-cognizable complaint was registered by the police, as confirmed by an official statement.
The viral video caught the attention of several Bollywood stars who took to their social media handles to slam the men in the video and also demand ‘stricter laws‘ against animal cruelty. Actors like Varun Dhawan, Malaika Arora, Zoya Akhtar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Bhumi Pednekar and many others voiced their concerns for the pooch and said that the current punishment – a fine of Rs 50-100 – is ‘outrageous’Malaika Arora said, “How can this amount make a dent to this level of cruelty ???!!!?”
Varun Dhawan, who has a pet pooch, wrote, Most horrible crime! Law has to change”
Zoya Akhtar pleaded, “Please change this law. Please arrest this man. Please make this clinic liable. Please be kinder to animals.”
Mini Mathur, on the other hand, called for the clinic to shut down, saying, “I could even BEAR to watch this video!! The management at this horrible “vet” clinic needs to be in jail while the two puppy beaters need STRICT laws to stay in because they’re mentally sick !! BEWARE everyone in thane @vetic.in has to be SHUT DOWN. we need stricter laws against animal cruelty.”
“I am so eagerly hoping for the laws to change … how do we make it happen,” asked Karishma Tanna.
Aaliyah Kashyap also commented on the issue, saying, “So so disturbing. The current punishment is outrageous and the law needs to change and hold people like this accountable. HORRIFIC.”
Bhumi Pednekar and her sister Samiksha also responded to the viral post. Bhumi said, “This is so disturbing. We need stricter laws.”

Samiksha said in agreement, “Absolutely horrific! Apart from the men who assaulted the dog, even the clinic should be held responsible. The incident happened in their care and such negligence should be accounted for. THE LAWS HAVE TO CHANGE!”
Videos circulating on Tuesday evening captured the moment police officers arrived at the scene and escorted the perpetrator to the police station for further questioning. However, it has been highlighted that police cannot initiate a formal investigation into a non-cognizable complaint without an order from a magistrate.
