Anil Kapoor surprises OTT platform with returning surplus ‘Thar’ budget | – Times of India



Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor has shed light on the evolving landscape of the film industry in the post-pandemic era, emphasizing the crucial role that budgets play in filmmaking.
During the India Digital Summit, Kapoor discussed the changing dynamics between theatrical and streaming content, using the example of the film ‘Thar,’ in which he starred alongside his son Harsh.
Anil Kapoor highlighted the significant shift in the availability of resources and talent, noting that the current scenario reflects a bustling industry with a high demand for professionals in various capacities. He acknowledged the challenge of coordinating schedules due to the busy calendars of actors and heads of departments.
Drawing attention to ‘Thar,’ which was released on OTT in 2022, Anil Kapoor revealed the unique approach taken during its production. The actor emphasized the importance of managing budgets wisely and recounted an intriguing incident with the OTT platform. AK mentioned that they saved money during the film’s production for the OTT release, and when he offered to return the surplus budget, the OTT platform was taken aback.
He humorously recalled saying, “Kharcha nahi toh kya karega, lelo wapas (If we didn’t spend it, what would we do? Take it back).”
Furthermore, Kapoor emphasized the nuanced approach needed for different types of films, distinguishing between big event films and smaller, more intimate projects. He cited Vidhu Vinod Chopra‘s ’12th Fail’ as an example of a smaller film that became a word-of-mouth hit, grossing over Rs 60 crore worldwide despite having a limited release.
