Emraan Hashmi recently opened up about the decade-old controversy surrounding his description of Aishwarya Rai as “plastic.” In a recent interview for the promotion of his upcoming series Showtime, Emraan shed light on the context of his comment, labeling it as a jest and emphasizing that he wouldn’t repeat the answer in today’s environment.Speaking to Galatta India, Emraan defended his remarks, stating, “I say things the way they are, and that was the running joke in that episode. Things were in jest, and it was for the hamper. Everything was fun.” He acknowledged the difference in societal dynamics, pointing out that people were more carefree back then, and the prevailing cynicism in today’s culture has led to a shift in attitudes, especially on social media.Expressing his observations on the changing landscape, Emraan remarked, “I don’t think there was so much critique and cynicism. There’s a certain cynical attitude also in society that you see reflected on social media now.”
He touched upon the consequences of expressing contrary views in the current climate, stating that people face backlash if their opinions go against popular sentiment.
Despite the repercussions he faced after the 2014 episode, where he promptly named Aishwarya Rai as the actor that comes to mind when he hears the word “plastic,” Emraan asserted that he has never been apologetic about his statements in the past and remains steadfast in his approach. In an earlier conversation with Bollywood Bubble, he acknowledged enduring consequences for calling “a spade a spade.”
