Navya Naveli Nanda had her mom, Shweta Bachchan, talk about their childhood on her recent podcast episode. Shweta shared stories about their growing-up years. SHweta shared that as the older child, she would often get in trouble and get punished by their mom, while her younger brother Abhishek rarely got in trouble or got punished.
Remembering how her mom, Jaya, encouraged her to join many different activities such as Bharatnatyam, Hindi classical music, swimming, as well as learning the sitar and piano.
Continuing, she added, “I used to get slapped a lot. There was even a time when a ruler broke on me. My mom used to beat me quite frequently.”
During the discussion among the three ladies about how Abhishek was spared from the ruler, Jaya commented, “I believe it’s always the first child who gets punished more. I was disciplined a lot as a child, but my sisters weren’t.”
When Navya asked why her mom received so many punishments, Jaya explained that Shweta was very annoying and stubborn as a child. She also disclosed that her husband, Amitabh Bachchan, didn’t approve of raising her hands with the children. This prompted Shweta to mention, “The most severe punishment Dad ever gave was making us stand in the corner.”
She continued with a joke, saying, “I actually enjoyed that punishment because it gave me time to make up stories and talk to myself in the corner.”
