Although Karan Johar had a pleasant childhood, he did receive a ‘whack’ from his mother Hiroo Johar at one time in his life. Karan laughed as he opened up about that incident in a recent interview. The director has always incorporated a lot of personal anecdotes into his films; in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, for example, the younger Rohan was unable to tie his shoelaces until he was in his teens.
In a chat on the ‘Be A Man Yaar podcast’, Karan revealed that he couldn’t tie his shoelaces when he was 12. “That was me in that scene… not being able to tie shoelaces is me. In fact, the only time I got a whack from my mom was because, at age 12, I couldn’t tie my shoelaces,” he recalled.
The filmmaker then opened up about the reason why he was unable to tie his shoelaces. He said, “You know why I couldn’t tie my shoelaces? Because I couldn’t bend, my stomach was coming in the way. It was ridiculously spoiled of me.”
In an earlier interview, Karan Johar discussed his upbringing and revealed that, despite being bullied by some of his peers, his parents were his main pillars of support. He had previously shared on Tweak India about being dubbed a ‘pansy’, a pejorative term for an effeminate male. He said, “It used to really haunt me. It wasn’t my weight to that extent but the word that made me feel like I wasn’t anywhere like the other children. It became my identity. I had to look more manly to fit in. I hope parents (today) are more understanding, like my dad and mom were. So, the sense of body and feeling of personality being called pansy were things that still haunt me. When I see it with other children, I am most compassionate to that situation because I know what I had felt at that time.”
