Imtiaz Ali and AR Rahman are known for their previous collaborations on films like ‘Rockstar‘ and ‘Tamasha‘. Together, the duo has now joined forces to elevate the musical world of Ali’s latest directorial, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila‘.
In an interview with News 18, AR Rahman opened up about working on Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, which is set to release on OTT next month.
Rahman expressed that he loves working with Imtiaz and finds him very friendly. He mentioned that with certain people, work happens naturally without any pressure, and Imtiaz is one of them. Rahman added that he had always wanted to explore Punjabi music because he loved the potency of the language in music. He also stated that working on this project was a great opportunity for him.
The Academy Award winner also revealed that the picture is quite naughty, and they had to find the right place for music in it. Reflecting on the character Chamkila, who is a composer, lyricist, and singer, he asked himself why he was needed for the project. Later, he realized that they could approach it like a musical, with everyone singing about ‘Chamkila’ and attributing both good and bad aspects to him. Rahman found this directorial perspective exciting.
‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ presents the untold true story of Punjab’s original rockstar of the masses, Amar Singh Chamkila, who emerged from the shadows of poverty and rose to the heights of popularity in the 80s due to the sheer power of his music, angering many along the way, which finally led to his assassination at the young age of 27.
‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ is all set to stream on the OTT platform Netflix on April 12.
