PS-I has been receiving widespread appreciation from fans and critics alike. Taking to social media handle, the production house penned a thank you note for all the love coming their way. The post read, “Thank you for giving #PS1 the biggest ever opening day for Tamil cinema worldwide!”
The film also marked Aishwarya Rai’s big-screen comeback after four years. She was last seen in the 2018 film Fanney Khan. Apart from Aishwarya, the film also starred Adithya Karikalan, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Trisha in pivotal roles.
‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’ is adapted from Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel by the same name. The film tells the story of one of the most powerful kings down South, Arulmozhivarman, who later became Rajaraja Chola I, the great Chola emperor.
Speaking about his magnum opus, director Mani Ratnam had told BT, “I’m really satisfied to have had the chance to do this film. It’s a difficult film, but every day, I had some kind of satisfaction. I was happy doing the film. And hopefully, the rest of the cast and crew were also happy. We had difficulties. We had to shoot through the pandemic. We had to wait, start-stop, start-stop.. That didn’t deter us. We went through with full conviction that we’d finish it.”
