Your latest song, ‘Maine Pi Rakhi Hai’ is one of the top songs on the music charts. What kind of reactions have you been getting for the song?
The reactions have been amazing. The song has been well received, and the movie has worked well. Having the people love the song in a movie that has done well is a heart-warming scenario. There are many people who are messaging and calling me to appreciate the song, and it is the best feeling in the world.
Apart from the fact that the song is topping the music charts, for me, it is important that it is a Pritam Da song. This is the first legit song that I have sung for Pritam sir. I have sung a couple of lines in a song in ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects, but it didn’t really click that much. I will consider this my first song with him. I have always dreamt of singing for him. Every aspiring singer dreams of this opportunity. It has been amazing because when I was 11-12 years old, I recorded an entire album with Pritam sir when he had just come to Mumbai to pursue his music career. I met him for the first time then. After so many years, this is the song that brings a lot of memories, hope and belief to my work. I am really happy and thankful to Pritam sir. The lyrics were written by Amitabh Bhattacharya sir. Amitabh and Pritam are the most happening combinations in the industry currently.
The song has really fun visuals. Was it equally fun to record the song?
The visuals and choreography are amazing. I think Ranbir Kapoor is one of the best dancers in the industry right now. He is so light on his feet. His expressions and the way he moves his body are amazing. His hook step reminds me of Shashi Kapoor’s style. I really loved the song when I went to watch the movie. It was fun recording the song, too. It is a really high-pitch song. For me, it was really high. I was determined to nail the song. It was an amazing experience. I am happy that people are loving it.

How was it recording the song with Shreya Ghoshal?
This song made a lot of my dreams come true. Firstly, it was a full-fledged song with Pritam sir and second, it was singing with Shreya Ghoshal. I can’t even express my feelings. One of my biggest dreams was to sing with Shreya ji. I have worked with singers who have been legendary in their work. However, I was waiting for a duet with Shreya ji and it finally happened. She is a modern-era nightingale. She is the best in our industry.
Is this the first time you have lent your voice to Ranbir Kapoor? How was your experience?
This is yet another dream-come-true moment for me. He is a modern day superstar. I have been fortunate that I have sung a song for the Kapoor scion. I am really happy. The first time I came across the song, I felt a bit nervous because it was a very high-pitched song. I was not sure my voice would suit Ranbir on screen. However, with the way he danced and the way he portrayed the song, it has gone to another level with his performance. I have a lot of Ranbir Kapoor fans in my family. Their reactions have been priceless.
Bollywood has gotten some original chartbusters after a very long time. Do you think there has been a dearth of good original songs of late?
No matter how long the night is, the day is sure to come. I believe Bollywood’s good time has started, especially after the success of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’. Vishal-Shekhar gave the film two superhit songs in the film. I feel that Pritam sir has the best understanding of what the audience needs. He is the most commercial music composer ever. Pritam sir has always given hit albums, it is never about just one or two songs. For the past three decades, he has been delivering hit albums. I always believed that no matter how much shor-sharaba happens in the music industry, Pritam Da’s one music album will revive the industry once again. He is a blessed and a very talented musician. He works like crazy. You can never match his mental frame or his energy.
Even Sachin-Jigar’s ‘Bhediya’ has an amazing album. I have a song in that album. Musicians like Sachin-Jigar, Pritam, Vishal-Shekhar, AR Rahman and Shankar Ehsaan Loy are pioneers of original songs. Whenever there is a downfall in the music industry, we just have to wait for these musicians to come and revive it.
