Trade Talk: All roads lead to Gadar this week | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

This could be a historically decisive week at the box office. What if the re-release of Anil Sharma’s Gadar: Ek Prem Katha becomes a considerable hit? The timing of the re-release is pitch-perfect. The anti-Pakistan sloganeering that forms a chunk of the climactic narration is very much in keeping with the current political sentiments in the country.

Also, the film has not dated one bit.

Thanks toShaktimaan Talwar’s powerful, emotionally-charged dramatic and compelling writing the 3-hours and 20 minutes of playing time just swishes by.
Such period epics are a rarity. And where do you get true screen heroes like Sunny Deol anymore? The actor’s smouldering eyes and raging screams are adrenaline-pumping hero-giri at its best. And not once does Deol take off his shirt. Over the decades, Sunny has not changed much. He still looks as though he can wrench a handpump out of the ground and wallop the hell out of thirty adversaries with the heavy tool.
Apart from being a solid precursor to the release of the sequel in August, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha is also a very timely reminder of why timeless classics need to be restored and re-released. After Gadar why not Lagaan which was released on the same Friday in 2001? Why not restore Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah, Mehboob Khan’s Mother India, Vijay Anand’s Guide, Guru Dutt’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and Shakti Samanta’s Amar Prem?
In the meanwhile the 3D version of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas has been ready and waiting for five years. Perhaps the producer Eros would like to let the public see what this version of the classic tale looks like? Saratchandra can perhaps petition for the privilege?

The other release this week is JioCinema’s Bloody Daddy, an awful title for the remake of the French 2012 action semi-classic Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Nights) with French actor Tomer Sisley performing all his stunts. Kamal Haasan too performed all his stunts himself in the Tamil remake Thoongaa Vanam of Nuit Blanche.
One is not sure if Shahid Kapoor has done all his stunts in Bloody Daddy. But he does pack in a punch in his performance as a desperate dad, which he has already played in Jersey. Does anyone want to see a second remake of a French film when the original is easily available on OTT?
For an original and engaging experience this week, the regional audience’s first preference seems to be debutant director Vignesh Raja’s Tamil Por Thozhil. A content-driven serialkiller procedural, which audaciously allows the content, rather than the actors to be king.
Shaktimaan got that right 22 years ago in Gadar.
