‘Gadar‘ film director Anil Sharma revealed in a recent conversation that he approached several actors to play the role of Sakeena in the first film. He ultimately roped in a newcomer, Ameesha Patel, for the role. He said that Ameesha submitted herself to the process, much to the maker’s satisfaction.
In an interview with Bollywood Thikana, Anil said one actress agreed to do the film but was asking for too much money.He also recalled how makers had told him to have a choice between her and Amrish Puri because they could only afford one, and Anil told them that he needed Amrish Puri because his character is pivotal in the Pakistani portions and the film couldn’t be made without him. He decided to find a new heroine.
He revealed that he auditioned Ameesha over two days and was then shortlisted with around 10 others. He said that Ameeha was as fair as the moon, which is what they wanted. Though she had issues with her diction, that was not the issue. He also praised Ameesha as the most hard-working actress, as she would rehearse every day for six months, five hours a day, going over every dialogue and scene hundreds of times.
Anil also shared how Ameesha used to walk with her head held high, and he would smack her on the back to get the posture right for the scene as women of that era had a slouched posture.
The first ‘Gadar’, starring Sunny Deol in the lead role, became a huge box office hit. The sequel, which was released a few months ago, also did great business. It is currently the third-biggest Hindi movie of all time in India, behind ‘Jawan‘ and ‘Pathaan‘.
