Randeep Hooda was all geared up to play the role of Havildar Ishar Singh in Rajkumar Santoshi‘s historical film Battle of Saragarhi. But after Akshay Kumar‘s 2018 film Kesari, which was based on the same subject, became a hit, Randeep’s Battle of Saragarhi never got a theatrical release and was eventually shelved.
In a new interview, Randeep revealed that he was completely shattered and felt cheated when Battle of Saragarhiwasn’t released.He gave 3 years to the project and lived the character of Ishar Singh for that period of time. He even rejected several films since he was required to have long hair and a thick beard to play the historical figure.
The actor told Mashable India that he went through a big stage of depression. He mentioned that there were many situations in life when he though there is nothing but darkness. He did Extraction also starring Chris Hemsworth in that stage of life when he was down and out. He had even thought of leaving Extraction for Battle of Saragarhi. But he is happy that he did Extraction because he got cheated with Saragarhi.Talking about his worst days, Randeep said, “I was quite affected by it. My parents won’t leave me alone. To escape from them, I would bolt my room, fearing that someone would cut my beard. Then I decided I won’t let this happen to me ever again.”
Earlier, Randeep had told Mumbai Mirror that he has not watched Kesari till date and stated that it didn’t excite him much. He had trained himself in several forms of martial arts. He underwent extensive preparation to portray a Sikh soldier accurately, which include physical training, learning about Sikh culture and traditions, and understanding the historical context of the battle. He had also mentioned that through the journey, he learnt the principles of Sikhism and became a better person.
