Twinkle Khanna sparked speculation on Instagram Thursday with a cryptic post about her surname. In the post, she drew a line across her name and added ‘Kumar’s plus 1’ below it. Many internet users decoded this as a comment on the government’s ‘maiden surname’ rule, which demands that married women must obtain a No Objection Certificate from their husbands to revert to their maiden names legally.
Her comment box flooded with mixed reactions from users. One commenter expressed being triggered by the post, while another praised its brilliance, promising to replicate it. However, several users were left puzzled, with many wondering about the post’s underlying meaning.

Trinamool MP Saket Gokhale previously slammed the regulation in Parliament, highlighting its importance. “For changing one’s name, a notification must be issued in the Gazette. These regulations imply that women who are separated or simply desire to return to their maiden surname (instead of their husband’s surname) will be required to submit one of the aforementioned documents,” stated the TMC MP.
“What justification exists for requiring ‘husband’s permission’ for a woman to change her own name?” he questioned. “As an MP, I am committed to taking all necessary steps to overturn and revoke this misogynistic rule,” he affirmed.
A woman had also contested the government notification before the Delhi High Court.
